Thekkady is a cool hill station on the Western Ghats, bordering the state of Tamil Nadu. Located in Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady is an end of the road location. Yes ending in the forest at the lake front.
This package keeps you busy from dawn to dusk. On the first day, it starts with an evening boat ride in the Periyar Lake. Second day you are in the forest the whole day for bamboo rafting and nature walk. On the third day, you are visiting the elephants in the morning, mid day – experiencing the spices and by evening, Kathakali art show. Last day in the morning, when the forest is fresh and cool, get set for another boat ride!
The Periyar Lake formed by the construction of the dam across the Mullaperiyar River in 1895. The lake harbours within itself a unique aquatic ecosystem. A boat cruise on the Lake is perhaps the best way to watch the wildlife in the reserve.The duration of boating is one and half hours. To watch wild animals, best cruise times are either early in the morning (07:30 – 09:00) or late in the day(15:30 – 17:00. You can enjoy an evening ride on the day you arrive and a morning ride on the day you leave Thekkady.
Dawn to dusk range hiking and rafting. A full day bamboo rafting with Nature walk, escorted by tribal guides who knows every nook and corner of the sanctuary. Covers the richest part of Periyar Tiger Reserve. The trip starts from the boat landing station by 08:00 and ends by 17:00 at boat landing station. You will be accompanied by an armed forest guard and 6 Guides. This programme is provided with food and one liter of package drinking water. 10km of walking and 3-4 hour rafting in the Periyar Lake. Maximum 15 persons and minimum 2 persons.
Spending time with elephant is interesting for families or couples. A rare opportunity to bath, feed and ride an elephant. You can also watch them dragging timber. The package ends with atea/coffee beak. The package is best suitable to be done in the morning when everything is fresh.
The scent may be of cloves, nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon or cardamom and sometimes a fragrance that combines the scents of two or more spices. This is what you experience when you visit a spice plantation. There is no other place in Kerala where you get to see all spice growing together. Ginger, garlic and turmeric too are found here in its original form. Get an insight into the growing, harvesting and processing of spices. You could find this everywhere in Kerala may be a 50 year back before the rubber plantations start spreading in large scale. You can buy fresh spices from these Spice Plantations. Take them to your home kitchen, gift them to your friends and family.
In the evening, join the artists from Kalamandalam (World famous art school of Kerala) for Kathakali dance show. Kathakali, literally meaning ‘story-play’, is a dance-drama originated in the 17th century. It is a harmonious combination of five forms of fine art – Literature (Sahithyam), Music (Sangeetham), Painting (Chithram), Acting (Natyam) and Dance (Nritham). You should reach early for the make up session, which is the highlight of the programme.
